Inflation 6.74 percent in lock-down: consumer goods more expensive

Kathmandu. Consumer prices have risen due to the government's crackdown on corona virus (Covid -19 ) prevention.

According to the data released by Nepal Rastra Bank, the annual point-based consumer price inflation stood at 6.74 percent in April. Such inflation was 4.44 percent in the corresponding month of the previous year.

Inflation in the food and beverages group was 9.68 percent and non-food and services group was 4.48 percent in the review month. Prices of vegetables, fruits, spices and pulses and nuts under the food and beverages group increased during the review month.

The prices of education, health and clothing and footwear sub-groups under the non-food and services group have increased slightly

Inflation in the Kathmandu Valley was 7.19 percent, 7.04 percent in the Terai, 5.84 percent in the hills and 4.83 percent in the mountains during the review month. Inflation in these sectors was 4.74 percent, 3.95 percent, 4.80 percent and 6.20 percent respectively.

According to the NRB, the annual point-based wholesale inflation stood at 7.77 percent in April 2012/13. Such inflation had stood at 4.38 percent in the corresponding month of the previous year.

Wholesale prices of consumer goods, intermediate goods and capital goods increased by 8.20 percent, 8.47 percent and 2.75 percent respectively during the review month. Wholesale prices of construction materials declined by 3.76 percent during the review month.
