Why not given 2 percent interest discount banks, NRB is taking action

Nepal Rastra Bank has made an arrangement to give 2 percent interest discount to the debtors affected by COVID-19 but most of the banks have not given the instruction to give 2 percent interest discount.

"Banks have told borrowers to pay full interest now. According to the information received, Nepal Investment Bank, Citizen Bank, NMB Bank, NCC Bank, Prabhu Bank, Prime Bank and others have given interest discounts to those affected by Covid 19. But the rest of the banks have said they will only give a discount when paying next month's interest.

Chairman of the Bankers' Association, Bhuvan Dahal, said that some of the banks were in the process of implementing the directives of the National Bank.

Executive Director of Nepal Rastra Bank Gunakar Bhatta informed that action will be taken if the banks do not implement the policy. He said that if the borrower has not received interest exemption, he can lodge a complaint at the Complaints Unit under the Banking and Financial Institutions Regulation Department of Nepal Rastra Bank.

If the borrower does not get interest discount as per the rules, the complaint can be registered in the complaint unit of Nepal Rastra Bank along with the details of the bank, type of loan, discount to be received, etc., said NRB. Spokesperson Bhatta informed that Nepal Rastra Bank will take action on the basis of the tender.
