Interbank transactions declined by 79 percent in Nepal

Kathmandu. The transaction amount between banks and financial institutions has decreased by more than 79 percent.

According to Nepal Rastra Bank, in the first eight months of the current Fiscal Year, the total inter-bank turnover of commercial banks was Rs. 598.61 billion and that of other financial institutions (excluding commercial banks) was Rs. 146.70 billion. It is 79.46 percent less than the corresponding period of the previous year.

According to the central bank, the total inter-bank turnover in the corresponding period of the previous year was Rs 1.237 billion from commercial banks and Rs 110.05 billion from other financial institutions.

The weighted average interest rate on 91-day treasury bills was 3.97 percent in February / March of the previous year and 2.03 percent in February / March 2077. Similarly, the weighted average interest rate on inter-bank transactions between commercial banks was 4.35 percent in February 2012/13 and 1.26 percent in 2077. The average inter-bank interest rate, which is the monetary policy target, stood at 1.26 percent in Falgun 2077.
