Monterey Policy 2079/80: Bonds can be counted as deposits for one year

Kathmandu. Banks and financial institutions will be allowed to count bonds as deposits. Nepal Rastra Bank announced the monetary policy for the next fiscal year 2079/80 and has made provision that the bonds can be counted as deposits till the end of June 2080.

Through last year's monetary policy, the National Bank had arranged that bonds can be counted as deposits only until the end of June 2079. Currently, the banks that have issued more than 1 billion bonds have been demanding that the bonds should be counted as deposits.

Now banks and financial institutions will be able to invest 90 percent of the deposits. However, in the case of bonds issued before the issuance of the directive for the end of June 2079, it has been arranged that the licensed institution can also count them as deposits until the end of June 2079.

According to the National Bank, for the CD ratio, the capital fund and bonds other than bonds that are part of the capital fund, loans taken in foreign currency for a period of one year or more, and the reloan amount provided by the bank can be counted as deposits. Similarly, it is mentioned in the National Bank's circular that the licensed institution should specify whether the bond will be part of the capital fund or not at the time of issuing the bond.
