Kathmandu: The Government Study Committee has recommended the government to grant public leave two days in a year. The committee was formed by the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation to study the issue of public giving two days a week. The committee recommended that the government grant public leave two days a week and encourage the private sector to do the same.
The study committee comprising Kamala Prasad Bhattarai, joint secretary of the ministry, Rudra Singh Tamang, director general of the tourism department, Dhananjay Regmi, executive director of the Nepal Tourism Board, Basude and Chimire, deputy secretaries of the home ministry, and Kavindra Nepal, deputy secretary of the federal affairs and general administration ministry.
The committee made the recommendation after studying the international practice of public holidays and its impact on the country's GDP. The committee concluded that the study was conducted after studying the issues of promotion of domestic tourism, reduction in public expenditure, reduction in fuel, increase in productivity and other issues.
The committee also discussed with stakeholders the study of papers and documents published in the past, the impact of two-day leave on tourism service flow traffic management and government expenditure. The committee has stated that the opinions of experts, industrialists and conclusions of discussions with trade unions have been included in the study method.
International practice, treaty agreements and policy rules are also considered as the basis of the study. According to a study conducted by the committee, public holidays are given two days a week in 88 percent countries of the world The study found that 12 per cent of countries give leave only one day a year, while one country gives leave three days a year.
