Kathmandu. A new variant of Covid-19 has appeared in South Africa. This variant is named B1.1.529. The new variant, which was confirmed on Tuesday, is said to have changed at a faster pace. Scientists have expressed concern that the vaccine that has been developed so far against Kovid will not be effective against the new variant.

Following the discovery of a new variant of the Covid in South Africa, the government has placed health desks at all checkpoints, including Tribhuvan International Airport, on high alert. Spokesperson of the Ministry of Health and Population and Director of Epidemiology and Disease Control Division (EDCD) Dr. Krishna Prasad Poudel said, "Those coming from South Africa have been asked to undergo testing, sequencing and even quarantine at the health desk."

A new variant was discovered last Monday, according to information released Thursday by South Africa's The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD). While doing genomic sequencing, new variants have been seen in 22 samples so far. It is said that the new variant was seen in the sample collected from November 14 to November 23.
