The number of Commercial banks in Nepal is 20 : The current year 12 have been merged in to 6 Banks

Kathmandu. After Laxmi Bank and Sunrise Bank merged and started integrated business, the number of commercial banks has now reduced to 20. According to the 'Big Merger' policy taken by the National Bank, in the current financial year 2079/80 only 12 commercial banks have merged with each other through mergers and acquisitions and six have been established. Eight commercial banks went for merger and acquisition in the month of January alone.

Kumari Bank and Nepal Credit and Commerce (NCC) Bank merged into 'Kumari Bank Limited', Global IME Bank and Bank of Kathmandu merged into 'Global IME Bank Limited', Prabhu Bank Limited acquired Century Bank to form 'Prabhu Bank Limited' and Mega Bank. and Nepal Investment Bank have merged to form 'Nepal Investment Mega Bank Limited'. Similarly, Himalayan Bank acquired Civil Bank Limited last February.

Earlier last financial year, Nabil Bank Limited acquired Nepal Bangladesh Bank. Similarly, Global IME Bank merged Commerce and Trust Bank in March 2070 and Janata Bank in November 2076. In June 2070, NIC Bank and Bank of Asia merged to become NIC Asia Bank. Prabhu Bank merged Kist Bank in August 2071 and Grand Bank in February 2072.
