As per the information given by the Insurance Committee, the regulatory body of the insurance sector, 18 existing life insurance companies have invested Rs 48.27 billion in ordinary shares of listed public companies and preference shares and bonds of banks and financial institutions.

The Insurance Committee has made arrangements for life insurance companies to invest up to 10 percent of the total investment in ordinary shares of listed public companies. Similarly, commercial banks, development banks and finance companies have been allowed to invest up to 20 percent of their total investment in preferred shares and bonds.

The government-invested Rastriya Bima Sansthan is the largest investor in ordinary shares of listed public companies.
