Ujjwal Thapa : A true watchdog of alternative Nepali politics

Kathmandu. Ujwal Thapa, 44, leader of Vibekshil Saja Party has passed away. He died at 4:25 pm on Tuesday, June 3, 2078 BS while undergoing treatment.

The late Thapa had become a beacon of hope among the youth at a time when disgust towards political parties was spreading in Nepal. By attracting young people to politics different from traditional politics, Thapa had started a campaign of alternative politics in Nepal. And he tried to change the concept of traditional politics.

Political life : Family members wanted to keep Ujwal, who is married to Erica Adhikari, away from politics. In 2010, various political parties in Nepal used to declare Nepal Bandh on a daily basis. Ujwal, who always wanted to present himself in a different way, along with other youths started a campaign at that time, "Nepal is open".

As part of the "Nepal is Open" campaign, they staged various protests. They stopped the word "closed". He also termed the bandh as an extreme atrocity of the parties. Ujwal Thapa is the main campaigner of the campaign to ensure the rights of the people by carrying pamphlets titled "Nepal Bandh" and "Nepal is Open" against it.

By holding a general meeting on May 28, 2012, the campaign was established as a political party under the name of Vibekshil Nepali Dal under his leadership. The party was legally registered during the second election of the Constituent Assembly by a group of youth activists who had been doing social work and had fielded four members as independent candidates in the second election of the Constituent Assembly. He registered his candidature from Kathmandu Constituency No. 5 and got 3,000 votes in the election.

Ujjawal had organized a 107-day agitation against violence against women at the Prime Minister's residence in Baluwatar in December 2012 after being robbed and raped by security personnel of Nepali student Sita Rai, who had returned from foreign employment.

Founded in 2012, the Vibekshil Nepali Dal gained official recognition in 2014. In the meantime, he has been raising his voice against the bandh, Lokman scandal, earthquake reconstruction delay campaign, Dr. Govind KC Anson movement, arbitrariness of any government party. He has played the role of party coordinator.

Suggestions came that there should be party unification with the common party founded by journalist Rabindra Mishra. Due to which the party was united and became a discriminating common party. Ujjwal also became the party's coordinator.
