Kathmandu. Himalaya Shamsher Jabara, the first governor of Nepal Rastra Bank has passed away. Thapa died at the age of 95 while being treated at Narvik Hospital in Thapathali, Kathmandu.
He was appointed as the first governor of Nepal on 14th Baisakh 2013. The exchange rate of 100 to 160 rupees to the Indian rupee (Bharu) fixed during his time is still maintained. After retiring from the job, he opened the Gorkha Brewery Company and brought Tuborg and Kalsvarg Weir into Nepal. After selling the company, he established Himalayan Bank and Himalayan Distillery.
Himalaya Shamsher Jabra, the first governor of Nepal Rastra Bank, passed away at the age of 95. He is the first governor to sign Nepali notes. A tribute meeting has been organized in his memory at Nepal Rastra Bank premises in Baluwatar. On the occasion, Governor Mahaprasad Adhikari garlanded his picture.
Himalaya Shamsher was suffering from Parkinson's problem for the past 5 years. He died during treatment at Narvik International Hospital in Thapathali. Late Rana became the first Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank after becoming the Secretary of the Government of Nepal. He was only 29 years old when King Mahendra established Rashtra Bank and appointed him as the governor. He is also the founder of Himalayan Bank.
The Nepal Rastra Bank has mentioned that with his death, the Rastra Bank has lost a guardian, the country has lost a skilled economist and the region of Nepal has lost a leading guide. Rastra Bank has also stated that he has made significant contribution in expanding and broadening the scope of Nepal's financial sector and also in industrial expansion.
