Banks in Nepal : 'C' category banks cannot exchange foreign currency

Kathmandu. 'C' category banks are not allowed to exchange foreign currency. Nepal Rastra Bank issued a unified directive said that 'C' category banks will not be allowed to exchange foreign currency. Nepal Rastra Bank has introduced a system to make it easier for industrialists who have taken loans from banks. The bank has made such provision by amending a unified guide 2079.

According to the unified directive, 'C' category banks are not allowed to exchange foreign currency. Nepal Rastra Bank has removed the provision that the branch offices of 'C' category banks and financial institutions can purchase foreign currency and sell it to the National Bank or commercial banks by obtaining foreign exchange license. Rastra Bank had earlier given permission to branch offices of 'C' category financial institutions opened in 30 districts to exchange foreign currency.

The National Bank has said in the guidelines, 'loans disbursed to industries such as bricks/blocks, pipes and fittings, loans related to education, health sector and loans invested in projects affected by natural/divine disasters such as floods, landslides, earthquakes, and disbursed to all other sectors up to 50 million rupees. At the request of the borrower, after analyzing the cash flow and income of the industry/business, at least 10 percent of the interest to be paid on the basis of necessity and justification can be collected and subject to the following conditions, the loan can be rescheduled and restructured.
