Kathmandu. Customer assaulted the branch manager of Himalayan Bank in the office for not giving a loan. The incident of a woman assaulting the branch manager of the bank's Palpa branch, Prakash Subedi, during a dispute over a loan has come to light.
The incident took place at around 3 pm on Magh 25, 2082 at the bank branch in Meldhara, Tansen Municipality-2, Palpa. 45-year-old Manju Regmi had gone to the bank to take a loan. She had demanded a loan of around 40 to 45 lakh rupees. However, branch manager Prakash Subedi had refused to give the loan, saying that the 'land on the Goreto road' she had presented as collateral was not acceptable according to the bank's policy.
Regmi had previously taken a loan from the same bank. She had repaid the loan in full some time ago. After that, when she applied for a loan again, the condition of the collateral was found to be weak and the bank came to the conclusion that the loan could not be disbursed after assessing the risk. It is said that the dispute began after Manager Subedi informed her of this.
Regmi, who initially showed mild dissatisfaction, gradually became angry. She had argued with the manager that the bank should be able to give her a loan since she was already a customer of the bank. She insisted that the bank should help her again since she had already paid the installments she had taken from the bank regularly. However, she became angry after the branch chief refused to control her. A situation of physical assault was created on Subedi.
A situation of chaos had arisen inside the bank for some time. With the help of other service recipients and bank security personnel in the bank, she was taken under control and taken out of the office. After the incident, Branch Manager Subedi took the treatment meted out to him seriously and filed a written complaint with the District Police Office, Palpa.
The police stated that the complaint was registered under registration number 160 on 27 Magh 2082 with a demand for action under Section 118 of the Criminal Code, 2074 BS, for the offence of ‘indecent behaviour’. After the complaint was registered, the police increased surveillance on Regmi. He was arrested during the investigation and necessary legal proceedings are underway.
Manager Subedi has presented bank employee Ramesh Raj Bajracharya as a witness to substantiate his claim. In addition, the bank claims that although there are no cameras inside the office, CCTV footage installed outside confirms the incident. The footage shows the activities after the dispute and Regmi being taken out.
However, Regmi has claimed that the bank has treated her unfairly. She has said that the bank has refused to provide a loan even though she has completed the necessary documents and procedures. She has also claimed that the incident was just a simple altercation.
